Review: Murder Unexpected

Murder Unexpected Murder Unexpected by Anita Waller
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Murder Unexpected is the second in the Kat and Mouse murder mystery series, and while it can be read as a stand-alone, some of the background to the relationships between Nan, Kat and Mouse would be clearer if you’d read the previous novel (but not much as it’s pretty clear how close they all are, a real family).

I adored the characters of Kat and Mouse and Nan is so great, just don’t swear around her !

Leon, Kat’s murderous ex-husband makes an appearance and I did think this is where the story was going, but there is so much more. The women’s PI business, Connection is thriving and their new client a recently widowed woman takes their investigation into a riveting, violent and sometimes emotional direction. There are crimes, various deaths, some violent and some very sad and moving. Murder Unexpected is an immensely enjoyable novel, with strong female characters and some real emotional twists and turns right to the very end. A credit to the very clever writing by Anita Waller. I loved it and can thoroughly recommend it.
